"Nipplegate" Ruling Under Review

Per Ars Technica, the U.S. Supreme Court has ordered a federal appeals court to re-examine its ruling against CBS for Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" during the 2004 Superbowl.

The FCC's original ruling, now commonly referred to as "Nipplegate," ordered the network to pay a $550,000 fine after Jackson's breast was briefly bared during a halftime performance. That fine was later thrown out by the lower court on the grounds that the incident was "fleeting," meaning it lasted less than one second. Now the fine may be reinstated.

The decision comes a week after the top court's decision to support the an FCC ruling against FOX Television for "fleeting expletives" used on air.

Writing on behalf of the majority vote, Justice Antonin Scalia explained, "because the FCC's prior safe-harbor-for-single-words approach would likely lead to more widespread use, and in light of technological advances reducing the costs of bleeping offending words, it was rational for the agency to step away from its old regime."

Twitterers shared their musings on the decision:

NBC Reveals Fall Lineup

Those waiting to see if their favorite NBC shows have been renewed have received confirmation--for some of them. According to EW.com, NBC announced "Heroes," "Southland," and "Parks and Recreation" will air in the fall. They join already-renewed shows like "The Office," "30 Rock," "Law & Order: SVU," "Friday Night Lights," "Celebrity Apprentice," and "The Biggest Loser."

But if you were one of the many fans hoping to hear about bubble shows like "Chuck," "Law & Order," "Medium," "Life," or "My Name is Earl," you'll have to wait a little longer. The announcement today did not mention any of these shows, but EW reports that a final ruling on those shows should be made by May 19. It is believed "Law & Order" and "Medium" will both return, but are finalizing episode counts.

NBC also announced four new dramas, and called for six expanded episodes of "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday." The new shows include "Day One," a show about life on earth following a global catastrophe; "Parenthood," a re-imagining of the movie of the same title; and two new medical dramas, "Trauma" and "Mercy." There will also be two new comedies, "Community" and "100 Questions for Charlotte Payne."

The Twitterverse was buzzing with excitement and criticism following the announcement:
  1. ISiddiqui

  6. Ira Madison
iramadison Is there a reason why NBC has two new medical dramas on in the fall? Besides the reason being that they suck?
  7. Daniel
dalami NBC's fall line up includes two medical dramas. Talk about #fail. ER is over, ship is sunk, no more med dramas, please. PLEASE!!!!

Jackman flexes box office muscle as "Wolverine"

Marking the arrival of the summer movie season, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" delivered big numbers at the box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $87 million.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Jackman's much anticipated "Wolverine" overcame critics' mixed reviews to claim the top spot. But despite its strong showing, the film fell short of 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand," which brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend.

Matthew McConaughey's romantic comedy, "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," followed a distant second with an estimated $15.3 million. Beyonce's thriller movie "Obsessed" held its own for the second weekend in a row, raking in an estimated $12 million.

As usual, mixed reviews dominated the Twitterverse:
