Jackman flexes box office muscle as "Wolverine"

Marking the arrival of the summer movie season, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" delivered big numbers at the box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $87 million.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Jackman's much anticipated "Wolverine" overcame critics' mixed reviews to claim the top spot. But despite its strong showing, the film fell short of 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand," which brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend.

Matthew McConaughey's romantic comedy, "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," followed a distant second with an estimated $15.3 million. Beyonce's thriller movie "Obsessed" held its own for the second weekend in a row, raking in an estimated $12 million.

As usual, mixed reviews dominated the Twitterverse:

  1. Joi Sigers

JoiTaniaSigers Wolverine is amazing. Any critic who says otherwise either didn't get it or was turned down by Hugh Jackman a couple of times. See it!

  2. Jonathan Tolentino

tolentinoje @RyanHoyt Saw Wolverine. It's a P.A.M. Perfectly acceptable movie. Didn't knock me out of my chair, but didn't feel like I wasted my money.

  3. Diana R. Wallach

dianarwallach Wolverine had some amazing special effects. But the most jaw dropping feat was that Hugh Jackman's body was not CGI. Wow.

  5. Toast Jammer

toastjammer Here's my question for Wolverine: Origin. Why are the action scenes in the video game of the movie, so much better than the movie?

Beyonce Impostor Fools Austrian Museum

A woman claiming to be singer-actress Beyonce Knowles was given a VIP tour of the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria on Tuesday, People.com reports. The museum received a call supposedly from Knowles' manager thirty minutes prior to the arrival, letting them know the star was on her way.

Museum officials were not initially skeptical since celebrity visits are not unusual, the museum's press officer said.

However, when the Beyonce look-alike emerged from her limo, her oversized sunglasses and thin frame cast some doubt. "She was too thin for Beyonce," the press officer said.

The impostor was given a tour anyway under the rationale that some stars look different in person than on television. The museum later found out the truth--that the woman claiming to be Beyonce was sent there by a local radio station playing a prank on the museum.

Twitterers were shocked that the Beyonce impersonator was so successful in her trickery.

Beyonce's 'Obsessed' #1 at the box office

Beyonce Knowles has a new #1 on the charts--the box office charts, that is.

According to Entertainment Weekly, "Obsessed" raked in $28.5 million over the weekend to finish ahead of Disney's "17 Again," which brought in $11.7 million during its second weekend.

Finishing a very close third with $11.4 million was the mixed martial arts drama "Fighting," starring Channing Tatum. Jamie Foxx's true-story tale of a musical prodigy turned schizophrenic and homeless, "The Soloist," took a hard hit, earning a disappointing $9.7 million.

Box office success aside, Twitterers offered their own rave reviews of each film.

Beyonce Recording is a Hoax

Earlier this week the Howard Stern Show played a recording, supposedly of Beyonce, singing horribly. The clip has since gone viral--though it's actually fake.

Beyonce spoke to MTV about the hoax, telling them, "It's perfect promotion, whoever came up with that idea."

Added her father-manager Matthew Knowles: "At 12 years into her career, the last thing someone should be questioning is her vocal ability."

Twitterers came to Beyonce's defense--but also continued to spread the clip around.
