Weekend Box Office Likes "Angels and Demons"

It was a blessed weekend for Ron Howard's film adaptation of "Angels and Demons," as it raked in an estimate $48 million at the box office.

But according to Entertainment Weekly, "Angels and Demons" fell short of its predecessor, "The DaVinci Code," which brought in $77.1 million during its debut in 2006.

J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" beamed into second place with a strong $43 million during its second weekend. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" rounded out the top three, bringing the film's three-weekend total to $151.1 million.

Filmgoers tweeted their reviews:

  1. Aimee
sermoa Angels & Demons was very good. We enjoyed it and thought that the deviations from the book were for the better - except for one wtf? moment!
  2. Matt Widmann
fray Angels and Demons was a good movie. Felt like a episode of 24. :)
  3. Rik van der Kroon
omigod Watched Angels and Demons in all its mediocrity. Are Dan Brown's books so bad they just can't make a good movie or is hollywood to blame?
  4. Marc Hobelman
incredimarc Oh, it's going to be a good but busy day. I keep thinking about how crazy the cockamamie science was in Angels and Demons.
  5. ms wu

Jackman flexes box office muscle as "Wolverine"

Marking the arrival of the summer movie season, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" delivered big numbers at the box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $87 million.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Jackman's much anticipated "Wolverine" overcame critics' mixed reviews to claim the top spot. But despite its strong showing, the film fell short of 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand," which brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend.

Matthew McConaughey's romantic comedy, "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," followed a distant second with an estimated $15.3 million. Beyonce's thriller movie "Obsessed" held its own for the second weekend in a row, raking in an estimated $12 million.

As usual, mixed reviews dominated the Twitterverse:

  1. Joi Sigers

JoiTaniaSigers Wolverine is amazing. Any critic who says otherwise either didn't get it or was turned down by Hugh Jackman a couple of times. See it!

  2. Jonathan Tolentino

tolentinoje @RyanHoyt Saw Wolverine. It's a P.A.M. Perfectly acceptable movie. Didn't knock me out of my chair, but didn't feel like I wasted my money.

  3. Diana R. Wallach

dianarwallach Wolverine had some amazing special effects. But the most jaw dropping feat was that Hugh Jackman's body was not CGI. Wow.

Mel Gibson Steps Out With New Girlfriend

Mel Gibson attended the L.A. screening of "Wolverine" last night, and he was not alone. People.com reports that the actor was seen with his new girlfriend, 39-year-old Russian songstress Oksana Grigorieva, "more than two weeks after his wife filed for divorce."

Gibson and soon-to-be ex-wife Robyn Moore had been married almost 29 years when Moore filed for divorce earlier this month. The couple had already been separated for three years.

EW.com was critical of Gibson's new arm candy, especially after his "drunken anti-Semite tirade" and aggressive religious preaching. "Gibson's dug a pretty deep PR hole for himself," the article said.

Fan reaction to the actor's love interest are less than approving.

  1. Julie Hampton
HamptonDesigns I am no longer a fan of Mel Gibson....anyone else...

Wolverine backs down in face of swine flu

Even a superhero with extraordinary healing powers is taking extra precautions when it comes to the recent swine flu outbreak. The Mexico City premiere of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" has been postponed after more than 100 people in Mexico have died from swine flu. According to People.com, a rep for Twentieth Century Fox says, "We were not only concerned about Hugh [Jackman]'s welfare – and we would never send anyone into harm's way – but we also have an enormous office filled with people we care about. There was no point in proceeding with the current conditions."

Twitterers' reaction to the decision vary from disappointment to humor:

  5. Kevin Barbare
KevinBarbareAAF Swine flu results in the cancellation of the 'Wolverine' Mexico City premiere. Probably just another excuse for Hugh Jackman to go shirtless

A rep for the premiere says there is a possibility the premiere will be rescheduled.
